Everyone has heard of American Girl and some people have heard of the Magic Attic Club, but not many people know that there are dozens and dozens of other 18" vinyl play dolls available. Some are not manufactured anymore (most, in fact) and may take a little hunting to find on the secondary market. But if you like variety in your collection, this is where you'll find out what your options are.
I call this section of Just Magic my "American Girl Family Tree Project" because I want to identify and describe all the sisters, cousins and other relatives of the popular American Girls. I've included some dolls that are either quite a bit bigger or smaller than 18" because they are related to American Girl in some other way. For instance, Global Friends dolls are only 15" but they have storybooks and accessories similar to AG (and their faces even look a lot like their cousins'.)
I have two lists of doll lines: those that have "profile" pages with more detail and those that I am aware of but that I haven't finished profiling. Within the lists, the dolls are grouped by size (roughly who can share clothes with whom) and then alphabetically by company name then doll line name.
