After the feasting, Princess Isabella, Princess Julia
and Princess Emma took their leave of Queen Alissa and the other
princesses. The Queen made them promise to return one day so she could
show them more of beautiful Carpathia.
They returned to the glade where the dancing had occurred earlier
and Julia stifled a yawn as they sat together in a circle on the pine
needles. For a moment, they enjoyed listening to the rustle of leaves in
Acorn's oak tree and watching the sun turn golden orange as it dipped
down below the pines.
"You got your wishes too," Julia reminded Emma and Isabella. "You
got to visit an exotic place and meet royalty." For a second the other
girls looked puzzled, then they remembered the conversation in Aunt
Cordelia's garden.
Without needing to discuss it, each girl reached up and unfastened
the clasp of her moonstone necklace. As the last clasp parted, the trees
began to shimmer and fade and soon the girls found themselves sitting in
the grass by the peaceful garden. The sun was high in the
sky again and they could hear the distant purring of a neighbor's lawn
mower.
"We're back," Julia said, rather unnecessarily, and the other
girls nodded a little sadly.
"I think we need to keep this a secret," Emma told the other girls
as she looked again at the moonstone in her hand.
"Do you think these necklaces will always bring us to other places
when we put them on?", Isabella asked.
Julia shook her head. "I think we need to be together. Do you
remember what the poem said? 'True beauty must be shared.'" As she said
the words, Julia thought she saw the moonstone in her hand glow a little
bit brighter. "And I think we need to recite the poem while we have them
on."
The other girls all nodded in agreement, as if it all made sense,
though Julia thought it was an odd sort of sense.
Emma asked, "And how should we explain our missing baskets?"
To which Julia replied, "I'm sure Aunt Cordelia will understand."
